Myrkytystietokeskus, In Depth

What this service actually does, and how to use it well if you ever need to.

A Free, Round-the-Clock Resource

As mentioned in section 1.3, the Myrkytystietokeskus (Poison
Information Centre) serves the whole of Suomi by phone,
around the clock, every day of the year.

The free number is 0800 147 111. There's also a normal-rate
line, 09 471 977, if the free line is ever unavailable.
Save at least one of these in your phone before you need it.

Who It's For

The Centre answers questions about the prevention and treatment
of poisonings for the general public, not just medical professionals.
You don't need to be in a confirmed emergency to call —
if you're genuinely unsure whether something eaten was dangerous,
this is exactly what the service exists for.

What to Have Ready When You Call

If possible, have ready: what was eaten (or a photo or sample
if you have one), roughly how much, how long ago, and any
symptoms so far. This is exactly the kind of detail the notebook
habit from sections 1.4 and 7.4 makes easier to provide quickly
under pressure.

Two different emergency contacts for different situations

112 vs. the Poison Centre

For a genuine emergency — difficulty breathing, loss of
consciousness, severe symptoms — call 112 first, Suomi's general
emergency number. The Poison Centre is for guidance on what to do,
including in less acute situations, and can advise whether
a trip to the emergency department is actually necessary at all.

A reassuring, calm phone conversation

Most Calls Don't End in a Hospital Visit

Many calls to poison centres are resolved with at-home guidance —
most ingestions, even ones that feel alarming in the moment,
turn out not to require emergency treatment. Calling is not
an overreaction. It's the fastest way to know which situation
you're actually in.

This Service Exists So You Don't Have to Guess

Foraging confidently doesn't mean foraging without a safety net.
Knowing this number exists, and being willing to use it without
embarrassment, is part of what makes it possible to forage
with genuine ease rather than constant low-level anxiety.
